Hallsville whips Lady Cats in three straight

Sept. 21, 2008 - The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats fell to 0-3 in District 13-4A volleyball action Friday night.

The visiting Hallsville squad took three straight wins over Sulphur Springs by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-21.

Maurie Lewis was a bright spot for Sulphur Springs with nine service points, including three aces. The Lady Cats made 16 errors and were inconsistent serving the ball all night.

Kaci Jackson had seven kills for Hallsville and five service points while Tana Atkins served for seven points, including two aces.

In the opening game, could have gone either way. The score was tied six times before Hallsville edged ahead 11-10. Then Sulphur Springs got good serving by Lewis for three points. Senior Brittani Crawford added a jump serve for an ace and Sulphur Springs went up 15-11. Errors by the Lady Cats led Hallsville back in the game and soon it was a 15-all game.

Down the stretch of the first game, Hallsville got points from Atkins off five serves as they scored 10 of the last 14 points to claim a 25-19 victory.

Down 1-0 in games, Sulphur Springs started slowing in game two and dropped behind 10-5. Hallsville turned low, twisting serve by Shelby Gideon into points as they went ahead 19-13. The Lady Cats then went on a 7 to 3 scoring burst to get within striking distance 24-20, but were still trailing. Hallsville closed out the game and won 25-20 with the Lady Cats making another hitting error.

Hallsville scored the first four points of game three. The visitors maintained the lead throughout taking a 22-14 lead late in the contest. Kills by Young and Elizabeth Daily sealed the 25-21 victory.

Sulphur Springs fell to 10-13 overall,0-3 in district.

Hallsville is now 15-13, 2-0.
