Hornets sting Trojans

Oct. 26, 2008 - QUINLAN - The Cumby Trojans attempt to end the Quinlan Boles Hornets winning streak came with no avail. The Hornets held the Trojans scoreless for the night with the lights on the ending scoreboard reading 40-0.

It was just the Trojans first district loss for the season. They record stands at 2-6 overall, 1-2 for district play. Their next district action will be on Halloween at Don Howard Stadium as the Trojans look to frighten the Wolfe City wolves into a loss.

Passing for the Trojans against the Hornets was junior Timmy Cook completed 16 for 26 passes gaining a huge 166 yards plus one interception.

Leading the Trojans in rushing was senior Ryan Vaughn with three carries for 14 yards followed by junior Michael Morris with his three for 10 yards, and junior Rodney Hobbs had eight carries for eight yards.

Freshman Jordan Strickland performed well for the night for the Trojans snagging six catches for 61 yards against the Hornets. Others receiving were Morris with four catches for 48 yards, senior Chris O'Neal with three for 29 yards, sophomore Justin Akers had two for 19, junior Alex Olker had two for 11 yards, and Vaughn had one catch for 2 yards.

Cumby had 180 yards of total offense for the night-14 in rushing and 166 passing against the 9th ranked Boles. The Hornets came out strong in the first half scoring 26 points before adjourning to the locker room. The Trojans defense held the Hornets to seven points a quarter in the last half of play. Olker and O'Neal recovered two fumbles for the Trojans. Boles has only given up 84 points to opponents all season.

More action for District 14-A for week nine will be between Quinlan Boles at Bobcat Stadium in Fruitvale and Dallas Gateway at Blue Devil Stadium in Celeste.
