Cumby flattens Fruitvale

Oct. 12, 2008 - The Harris Ratings predicted this one almost on the nose. The Cumby Trojans and head coach Edward Perez finally got the victory they have been seeking all season long. The Cumby Trojans flattened the Fruitvale Bobcats by 38 points on their own territory on Friday night. Harris Ratings had the Trojans win over the Bobcats with 28 points. This was the first week of district play for District 14-1A. The Trojans showed their multiplicity that head coach Edward Perez said.

Trojan junior Michael Morris snagged five catches for 95 yards; with one a 26-yarder. Sophomore Donny Rodriguez had two catches for 17 yards.

Junior Timmy Cook had a good night, completing eight of eleven passes earning the Trojans 112 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

For rushing, junior Rodney Hobbs lead with 11 carries for 144 yards with one 16-yard touchdown. Cook had six carries for 48 yards, one seven yard touchdown. Senior Ryan Vaughn had seven carries for 38 yards with a five yard touchdown, and Morris had four carries for 12 yards with a six yard touchdown. Compiling a grand total of 242 yards team rushing for the Trojans. The Trojans racked up 354 yards total offense against Fruitvale.

Trojan junior Taylor Gay had a hot foot, completing five out of six PATS. He also was one of two on field goals made from 37 yards and just missed on the 45 yarder.

Defensively, senior Cody Groening had an interception for the Trojans.

In the first quarter the scoreboard remained at zero for both teams; it was in the second quarter that the Trojans turned the tide scoring 24 points to Fruitvale's six going to the locker room. During the second half of play the Trojans prevailed with 13 points in the third and one TD to call it a first win.

Other match ups in the district were: Dallas Gateway at Quinlan Boles and Wolfe City at Celeste.

The Trojans will host Dallas Gateway next week.
