C-P can't stop Lone Oak winning streak

Nov. 2, 2008 - COMO - The Como-Pickton Eagles suffered another district loss to the undefeated Lone Oak Buffaloes on Senior Night at Ron Heflin Field.The Buffaloes scored 41 unanswered points.

The Buffaloes scored early in the first quarter, but the C-P Eagles line stopped the extra point with a hard block. With opportunity in the Eagles' hands, they drove the ball back down the field. This gave C-P Eagle sophomore kicker Miguel Mejia the chance for a 42-yard field goal. He came up just one yard shy of booting it good.C-P Eagle senior Phillip Cox had a good snag pushing the chains into Lone Oak territory.

Lone Oak took the ball back to score an additional 32 more points before halftime using their NASCAR offense. It proved to be fast as the second half moved quickly, so fast that it gave difficulties to the guest announcer, C-P assistant coach Bo Yates. The C-P Eagles defense held Lone Oak to just one field goal score in the last half of play.

The C-P Eagles were outgained by 390 yards. C-P junior James Carter was the leading rusher against the Buffaloes. He gained 45 yards on 16 carries. Others rushing were senior Austin Darby, junior Brandt Steele, sophomore Angel Mercando, junior Corey Gibson, junior Jeff Hendricks, and freshman Tanner Brumley. Como-Pickton had 54 total yards in passing.

COmo-Pickton was unable to answer the 13th ranked Buffaloes' scoring total before the final buzzer. The final came down in Lone Oak's favor 41-0.

In District 13-2A, the Como-Pickton Eagles record sits at 2-7 overall, 1-5 in district.

Prior to Friday's kick off, Como-Pickton seniors participating in extra curricular activities were announced. During the halftime show, the 2008 Football sweetheart was crowned from nominees: seniors-Maci Kight, Wilke Jacobs, Hannah Manverse, Deanna Garrett; juniors-Maggi Ledesma, Skye Brumley; sophomores-Michaela Williams, Breanna Peoples; and freshmen-Moriah Nolen, and Jessica Hendricks. C-P senior Hayden Howard had the honor of escorting the winning candidate, senior Wilke Jacobs.

Como-Pickton will travel to Alba-Golden to face off with the Panthers. The Panthers will be looking for their first win of the season. They have only scored a total of 43 points against their opponents. Kick off time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bud Moody Stadium in Alba.
