May 13, 2008 - Ebbonye Johnson made a splash at the Southland Conference Track and Field Meet last week.
Johnson, a freshman at Stephen F. Austin State University, won the conference championship in the heptathlon, a seven-event mix of running, jumping and throwing.
Johnson was a four-year state qualifier while at North Hopkins in multiple events. She ended up winning eight medals at the state meet in six different events (high jump, long jump, 100, 200, 400 and 300 hurdles).
She carried that versatility to SFASU, where she accumulated 4,894 points in the heptathlon, winning three of the events outright on her way to the championship.
The heptathlon is composed of the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash on the first day. The second day, the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run are contested.
Johnson won the high jump, 200 and long jump and was second in the javelin.
She edged out teammate Tabitha Riley by 112 points for the title.
