Panthers fall to Carlisle in area round

May 12, 2008 - District 11-4A had a tough ending to its baseball seasons as all three teams lost over the weekend, while in Class A, the North Hopkins Panthers were swept in their area round series with Price Carlisle.
In Class A action, the North Hopkins Panthers had a two-run home run in the top of the seventh from Lorenzo Rivera to tie Game 1 against Carlisle on Friday, but could not pick up the victory in a 3-2 loss.
Rivera's hit was the one hit allowed by Indians pitcher Cannon Coleman, who struck out 15 batters and walked one for his eighth win of the season.
In Game 2, Price Carlisle's Jeffery Williams homered twice and drove in six runs in a 10-0 victory. He smacked a grand slam home run in the first inning and a two-run shot in the fourth. The Panthers recorded three hits against Carlisle pitcher Quinlan Wedel.
The Indians (17-3) advance to play Maud in a best-of-three regional quarterfinal series at East Texas Baptist University.
In District 11-4A action, the Texas High Tigers had a 5-3 lead after six innings against Highland Park in Game 2 of their area series, but allowed eight runs - seven unearned - in the top of the seventh as the Scots swept the series with an 11-5 win. Highland Park won the opening game of the series 4-3 on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Lindale won the opening game of its series against McKinney North 5-1 at Rockwall Heath Thursday night, but were swept in their final two games, 3-0 and 4-1, on Friday and Saturday.
Sulphur Springs (15-12) was also swept in its best-of-three area round series by the No. 2 team in the state in Mesquite Poteet, 5-1 and 7-5. SSHS was the bi-district champion after a 7-2 win over Kilgore on May 3.
