Yantis golfers fifth at state

May 7, 2008 - AUSTIN - Yantis golf coach Michael Alphin was sitting beside the Goldthwaite coach when Tuesday's final results were coming in from the Class A State Golf Tournament.

"We were writing the scores down and figuring them up pretty fast," Alphin said. "It was really tense, but by the time the final scores were coming in, we knew where we landed."

Yantis missed getting bronze medals by a mere nine strokes, finishing fifth out of eight teams at the Morris Williams Golf Course in Austin.

"They did a great job. They played hard," Alphin said of his golfers. "They were a little disappointed in their placing, but I'm very proud of them."

Robert Lee won the tournament with a two-day, 36-hole total of 658, following by Iraan in second with 679. Then, things got interesting as Goldthwaite finished third with a 696, followed by Garden City at 700 and Yantis at 705.

Senior Cord Burnett led the Owls with a two-day total of 161. he shot a 78 on Monday and followed it up with an 83 on Tuesday to finish in seventh place individually. Junior Kenny Nunez carded an 88-92 to come in at 180, senior Carl Jordan shot an 86 after Monday's round of 96 to card a 182, junior Daniel Cerretani carded a 91-93 to finish at 184, and senior Darren Burgess had a 94-93 score for a 187 total.

Alphin said a heavy mist fell most of the day on Monday, while Tuesday was windy.

"It was a really tough tournament, and you have to admire the golfers who shot so well," Alphin said. "It was a new experience for my guys, and they worked extremely to get to this point."

Grapeland's Rusty Boyd was the Class A top golfer as he shot a 77-74 for a 151 total.

NOTES: Former Sulphur Springs golfer Joe Ross, now attending Harmony High School, finished fourth individually in Class 2A with a 79-69-148 total. ... Cooper's Malonie Oats carded back-to-back 89s to finish at 178 in the girls tournament.
