Yantis golfers in fourth, two strokes out of second

May 6, 2008 - AUSTIN - Cord Burnett fired a 78 on M0nday to tie for fourth place after the first round of the UIL Class A State Golf Tournament at Morris Williams Golf Course.

Burnett posted a 41 on the front nine and followed it with a 37 to finish out the round. The Owls finished the day in fourth place just two strokes behind Iraan's 349 and three back of second-place Meridian's 348. Robert Lee surged to the lead after the first round with a score of 328.

Logan Philly, Robert Lee and Camron Swarb of White Deer were tied at 74 to lead the first day of play. Grapeland's Ruston Boyd was next with a 77 with Burnett and Archer City's Sam Smith each at 78.

"Cord had a great day today and I expect him to be even better Tuesday," Yantis coach Michael Alphin said. "The rest of the guys were very nervous early and it showed but we feel like we can get back to our game Tuesday and we will be okay. This is quite an experience for our kids to be here at state."

For Yantis, Kenny Nunez came in at 88, Daniel Cerretani 91, Darren Burgess 94 and Carl Jordan 96.
