Yantis golfers playing for state title
From Staff Reports
May 2, 2008 - This will be the first year for Yantis golfers to be playing at the UIL State Golf Championship, but if they continues to shoot as they have all year, they could be in the running for a Class A state title.
The Owls, who won Region III by 26 strokes over last year's state bronze medalist Lindsay, will compete at the state tournament on Monday and Tuesday. The Class A event will be held at the Morris Williams Golf Course in Austin.
The Owls have been consistently shooting in the mid-320s to 330s all year. If they can duplicate that on the 6,249-yard, par-72 course for 36 holes, they will be in the running for a medal. The last two years, the winning teams have shot 654 and 653, respectively.
Playing for Yantis will be Cord Burnett, Darren Burgess, Kenny Nunez, Daniel Cerretani and Carl Jordan. They are coached by Michael Alphin.
The squad finished third at regional last year - missing a state berth by one place. This year, there was no such heartbreak. Burnett was fourth individually at regional, while Burgess, Nunez and Cerretani all finished in the top 17.
NOTES - Also playing in the state tournament in Class 2A will be Joe Ross, a former SSHS golfer who now attends Harmony, and Melonie Oats of Cooper.
