Wildcat netters win consolation title at Ennis

From Staff Reports

March 31, 2008 - ENNIS - The Sulphur Springs Wildcats varsity tennis team won a consolation championship in mixed doubles at the Ennis Lions tennis tournament last Friday.

The mixed doubles team of Shelby Carter and Josh Stoltenberg won the title, while Katie Moore and Alejandra Lira played in the consolation quarterfinals of the girls doubles but were defeated.

"We went and played a varsity tournament at Ennis," said SSHS tennis coach James Lovett. "We played some real good, high caliber schools out of Dallas and for the most part I was very much pleased. It was mostly the freshmen and sophomore players."

Lovett said his No. 1 doubles team of Robert Stevens and Zach Adams went 1-1 in the tournament and were defeated by a team that played in the finals.

"Robert Stevens and Zach Adams won their first match and then lost their second match against a team that played in the finals," the coach said. "The team they played was a very good team and it was a hard fought match."

Lovett also praised the play of Luke Penny and Garrett Swatsell, as they made the switch from doubles to singles, while Keagan Stallcup won a match in singles competition.

The tennis team will travel to Kilgore for a match on Thursday, weather permitting, before the start of the District 11-4A tournament next Tuesday and Wednesday in Lindale.

"We are going to Kilgore for a warmup match on Thursday and Kilgore is a good upcoming team like we are," Lovett said. "This is a match to warm us up for district when we go over there next Tuesday and Wednesday. It will not make things tough for us towards district if the match is rained out but it will help us focus for district.

"District will be very tough because Texas High, Lindale, Paris and Mount Pleasant have some good players. We have not played North Lamar so I am not sure what they have yet and we should be ready to face whoever we play."
