Wildcats JV undefeated with win over Longview

March 24, 2008 - LONGVIEW - The Sulphur Springs JV baseball team remained undefeated on the season with a 14-5 late-inning win over Class 5A Longview Lobos Thursday afternoon.

The Lobos and Wildcats were even at 4-4 after five complete innings. But in the sixth inning, SSHS broke the game open with an eight-run, two-out rally. With two outs, Shane McQueen, Colby Suggs and Mason Morton knocked consecutive hits to load the bases. Josh Halcomb then drove in McQueen with a bases-loaded walk. Jake Dougan, Jocko Spataro, Kade Wimberly, Grayson North and Conner Brackahn followed with five consecutive hits in the inning.

For the day, North, Suggs, Dougan and Wimberly each recorded two hits. Suggs, Douganm, Brackhahn and Spataro added two RBI apiece.

Starting pitcher Daniel Rosales (2-0, 2.10 ERA) lasted just one inning giving up three runs, one earned, and two strikouts for the Wildcats. Reliever Dougan (2-0, 0.78 ERA) tossed four innings to get the win, striking out seven batters. Closer Bryce Jenkins (2-0, 0.64 ERA) wrapped up the final two innings striking out three and allowing one run.

Midway through the season, offensive team leaders are: Suggs (.600 BA, 2 HR, 19 RBI), Dougan (.522, 8 RBI), North (.481, 13 runs, 7 SB), McQueen (.467, 1 HR, 10 runs), and Brackhahn (.400, 11 runs, .591 OBA). The pitching staff as a whole has been solid with a combined 1.47 ERA and a .133 opponents' batting average.

The undefeated (9-0) JV squad will open district play next week as they face Mount Pleasant at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, and Lindale at 7 p.m. Friday. They finish out the week with a non-district game against McKinney North at 11 a.m. Saturday. All three games are at Eagle Stadium.
