District golf tourney opens today in Paris

From Staff Reports

March 24, 2008 - The SSHS girls golf team placed fourth last week in their final tune-up before the three-round District 11-4A tournament begins today.

Competing at Garden Valley Golf Course in Lindale on Wednesday, the Lady Cats were fourth out of 13 teams, shooting a 432.

Junior Brittany Cheatham again led the team with a 101, while Miranda Conway carded a 106, Dani Johnson shot a 112 and Caitlyn Potts shot a 113. Kaylie Perry added a 122.

The girls played the day after heavy rains doused the area.

"They looked pretty good," said coach Linda Rankin. "We picked up a lot of strokes putting because the mixture of rain and not being able to mow the greens made them very tricky. But, the girls looked good from the tee to the green.

"The approach shots were good, but it was tough to read the greens. Some were very slick and some were very slow."

The SSHS girls and boys both opened district play today at the Paris Golf and Country Club. They will be trying to secure one of the top two places in district to advance to the regional meet.

The district tournament will continue next Monday as Sulphur Springs will host the second round. The third and final round is set for April 7 in Lindale.
