JV Wildcats run-rule Mesquite Horn

March 18, 2008 - After over two weeks of rain outs including six games and numerous practices, the Sulphur Springs junior varsity Wildcats returned to action on Monday, defeating Class 5A Mesquite Horn Jaguars 12-2 in six innings.
In the top of the first inning, SSHS catcher Jocko Spataro gunned down two runners attempting to steal second base to keep Horn off the scoreboard. In the bottom half of the inning, the Cats capitalized on defensive errors to score three runs.
In the second inning, SSHS added two more runs on a two-run homer by Shane McQueen.
The Jaguars got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on two hits and two errors. The Wildcats responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame on hits by Spataro, Grayson North, Conner Brackhahn, Colby Suggs and Mason Morton.
The Cats added two more runs in the fifth inning and added the final run in the sixth to end the game on three straight base hits by Bryce Jenkins, Jake Dougan and Spataro.
Suggs started on the hill and tossed 11 strikeouts to get the win. He pitched five innings, giving up just one earned run on two hits with three walks. Reliever Jenkins threw a scoreless sixth inning to finish the game that was ended with a Suggs-to-Mason Morton double play.
The JV squad will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to play the Longview Lobos at 1 p.m.
