Winning Serve: Wildcat tennis handily beats Paris
From Staff Reports
March 14, 2008 - In their first home match of the year, the Sulphur Springs tennis team went 7-3 against district-rival Paris at the George Fox Tennis Courts Thursday afternoon.
"In the matches that we won, I was really impressed with how we played," said first-year coach James Lovett. "Our team is getting very good right now and so far the only two rivals we have to worry about are Lindale and Texas High.
"We played mostly with our younger players because most of our seniors were already on Spring Break or other events. We played with the freshman and sophomore team and was able to control their varsity very well."
On the girls side, the Lady Cats squad had two players as Shelby Carter won three matches against Paris, while freshman Alejandra Lira lost her match 8-6.
On the boys side, Josh Stoltenberg went 1-1 on the day as he won his first match 8-6 and lost his second match by a score of 8-1. Jordan Horne won his match against Paris by a score of 8-1 and the doubles team of Zach Adams and Robert Stevens went 1-0 with an 8-0 win in their match.
The doubles team of Garrett Swatsell and Luke Penny went 1-1 in their doubles matches as they won their first match 8-1 and then lost their second match 8-6 to Paris' No. 1 team.
The Wildcats will return to the George Fox Tennis Complex during Spring Break with a match on Tuesday against Van at 3 p.m.
"We are going to play with who we have and hope that we play pretty well," the coach said. "Van is going to be a tough match with the players that we have here next week and hopefully we will come out good in the match."
The Wildcats finish out the schedule with matches at Ennis and Kilgore before the District 11-4A team tennis tournament April 8-9 in Lindale.
