Owls win consolation title at tournament

From Staff Reports

March 3, 2008 - CAMPBELL - The Yantis Owls brought home the consolation championship of the Campbell Baseball Tournament Saturday with a 13-3 win over Ector.

Utility player Jordan Davis and second baseman Randy Smith were named to the All-Tournament team.

Allen Rose started on the mound for Yantis, but gave way to Terry Thompson with the Owls leading 9-3 and the bases full. Thompson struck out the first batter he faced on three pitches to end the threat and went on to record six strikeouts in the final 2 and 1/3 innings.

Rose added a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Davis had four RBI with two hits, and Carl Jordan added a pair of hits for a nine-hit Owl attack.

"After losing two close games on Friday, I was really pleased with how we came back and played Saturday. We have yet to have a full team at practice with the late start after basketball and golf and tennis in full swing," Yantis coach Larry Tucker said. "We played great on defense for the beginning of the season. We just left too many runners stranded. When  our hitting comes around, we will beokay."

The Owls are 2-2 for the season. District play will begin March 18 at Miller Grove for Yantis.
