From Staff, Wire Reports
June 30, 2008 - Local fans can watch tonight on television as Kyle King vies for a spot on the U.S. Olympic track and field team.
King, a SSHS 1999 graduate, is scheduled to run at 11:40 p.m. local time in the finals of the 5,000-meter run. The top three in the event qualify to represent the United States in the Bejing Olympics in August.
The race will be shown live on the USA network.
King is believed to be the first Sulphur Springs runner in history to qualify for the Olympic Trials. In addition to the 5,000 meters, he has also qualified for the 1,500 meters.
King qualified for the 5K finals by finishing sixth in his semifinal heat on Friday night in a time of 14 minutes, 5 seconds. Immediately after the race, he laid down on the track and was attended to by medical personnel for dehydration. The trials are being held in Eugene, Ore., where the temperature was still in the mid-80s at race time, which is unseasonably warm.
King was given intravenous fluids and was feeling better on Saturday and even went for a training run that day.
