June 5, 2008 - The Sulphur Springs Wildcats are going to start the 7-on-7 league this afternoon with a prime-time matchup.
The Wildcats, who are hosting the all-pass football league for the third year and are the defending champs, will take on Royse City in the opening game at 4 p.m. today.
Royse City and Sulphur Springs boast two of the top quarterbacks in the state. Royse City's Richard Morrison committed recently to play for the University of Arizona, while Sulphur Springs' Tyrik Rollison - ranked in the top five in the nation by Rivals.com - is mulling offers from dozens of universities across the nation.
The two teams met in the semifinals of the Royse City tournament two weeks ago, with Sulphur Springs winning the game and the tourney.
The 7-on-7 league will have games every Thursday in the month of June at the James Cameron Memorial Practice Fields adjacent to SSHS. There will be four games going on at the same time, with 10 teams playing in the varsity league and six more in the JV division.
In today's games, the SSHS varsity will play Rains at 7 p.m., while the SSHS JV will take on Rains JV at 4 p.m. and Como-Pickton's JV at 6 p.m. The Sulphur Springs freshmen will play the Mount Vernon JV at 5 p.m. and the Rains JV at 7 p.m.
Admission to the games is free, and spectators will probably want to bring lawn chairs since there is no seating.
