Local teams beaten in Dixie state tourneys

July 22, 2008 - The Hopkins County Belles and Debs wrapped up their state tournaments on Sunday with losses to Bonham and Denison, respectively, at Coleman Park.
In Debs action, Denison defeated Hopkins County 7-3 in the championship game, while Bonham defeated Hopkins County 4-3 in an elimination game in Belles action.
Denison 7, Hopkins County 3
Hopkins County opened up the scoring in the first inning as Cayla Newkirk led off the inning with a single, followed by a walk to Lindsey Lemon. Kendyl Barrett then flied out to right and Breanna Mills drove in Newkirk with a fly to center field for the 1-0 lead.
Denison then countered with a pair of runs off Hopkins County starter Lindsey Lemon to take their first lead of the game.
Both teams were held scoreless until Denison scored two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead heading into the sixth. Denison then scored three runs in the sixth as Destiny Moore, Kaci Bryant and Samantha Kuneman scored to give them a 7-1 lead.
Hopkins County rounded out the scoring with two runs in the seventh as Lemon and Barrett came around to score.
With the loss, the Debs team finished as the runner-up behind Denison.
Bonham 4, Hopkins County 3
After an 11-4 loss to Liberty in their final game on Saturday, the Hopkins County Belles team came into Sunday's elimination bracket needing a win over Bonham to reach the championship game.
Hopkins County was able to take the early 1-0 lead as Mia Debase walked and scored in the top of the first inning.
Bonham came back with two runs in the bottom of the second inning as Mayo drove in Bardwell and Durst off HC pitcher Candice Wilks.
Hopkins County then tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning as Ayana Taylor scored.
Bonham took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth as Walker scored to give them a 3-2 lead.
Hopkins County's Mia Taylor tied the game in the top of the seventh as she singled with one out and Ashley Bryant doubled her home.
Bonham then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Nguyen came around to score.
Wilks pitched a complete game for Hopkins County and struck out three batters.
