Local All-Stars come within one game of state tourney

July 15, 2008 - The 8-year-old Sulphur Springs Minor League team, coached by Tory Humphries, competed in the PONY Regional Tournament in Irving over the weekend and came within one game of going to the state tournament.
After dropping the first game to Texas Sport, a metroplex select team, Sulphur Springs beat the Texas Warriors from Rowlett 15-5, Corsicana 10-4, Irving 13-3, and Sherman 10-6 to reach the finals. They lost the championship game to Texas Sport 18-7, and fell one game shy of a birth in the state tournament.
The SS team hit five home runs out of the park in Irving. Ryan Humphries had three homers, and Triston McCormick added two. The most dramatic moments of the tournament came in the last inning of the semifinal game against Sherman.
Trailing 3-1, with one out, Heston Golightly and Zane Haywood got the rally started with singles. Dedric Godbolt hit a rope to center to cut the lead
to 2-1. Bryson Lynn knocked in the tying run with a single to left field.
McCormick and Humphries then hit back-to-back home runs. Gavin Millsap,
Elmer Rodriguez and Joe Forshee recorded the final runs of the inning.
McCormick, Godbolt, Millsap, Lynn and Humphries had double digit hits during the tournament.McCormick, Humphries and Godbolt were the top three RBI producers and run scorers. Ryder Caddell, Michael Arnold, Ty Latham and Golightly also batted over .500.
Dixie State Tournaments
The Dixie Belles and Dixie Debs state tournaments will be played at Coleman Park, beginning Friday. Each tournament will have a local team participating.
