July 8, 2008 - Sulphur Springs' 7-on-7 team has learned its schedule for the state tournament this weekend, and they'll be playing three teams they haven't faced before.
The Wildcats will be in Pool H with Houston Memorial, Denton Guyer and Lufkin.
All pool games will be played on Friday at the Penberthy Intramural Fields on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station. Sulphur Springs will take on Lufkin at 1 p.m., Houston Memorial at 3 p.m., and Denton Guyer at 5 p.m.
There are 16 pools in the 64-team field for the FSN Southwest 7-on-7 State Championship presented by adidas and Academy Sports and Outdoors. The top two teams in each pool advance to Saturday's single elimination Championship Bracket. The other two teams enter into a single elimination Consolation Bracket.
The championship game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Kyle Field.
Of the 64 teams in the field, only 12 are Class 4A; the rest are Class 5A. In Pool H, Houston Memorial and Lufkin are both Class 5A, while Denton Guyer is 4A.
Sulphur Springs earned a berth in the tournament by winning the Tyler Lee tournament on June 21. The other three teams in Pool H were runners-up in their respective tournaments.
Lufkin was second in the tournament they hosted on June 21. The tournament was won by Klein Forest. Lufkin is led by quarterback Jeffery Claybon, who threw for 2,042 yards and 20 TDs last fall as a junior.
Houston Memorial was runner-up at the Rosenberg Terry tournament on May 31 to Katy. Memorial has a strong defense, led by safety Michael Ratterree, who returned two interceptions for touchdowns last season.
Denton Guyer placed second at the Colleyville Heritage tournament on May 24 that was won by Arlington Lamar. Guyer is strong at running back and receiver, with two starters each returning at those positions, but is breaking in a new quarterback.
This is Sulphur Springs' fourth trip to the state tournament, returning for the first time since 2004, which was the only year the Wildcats advanced to the Championship Bracket.
