Yantis girls wrap up district title

Saltillo keeps on winning as well

Jan. 30, 2008 - The Saltillo Lions and Lady Lions continued their unbeaten streaks through District 22-A with wins over Fannindel.

Meanwhile in Yantis, the Lady Owls wrapped up the District 18-A title with two games to go in their season and the Owls secured a playoff spot with a win over Boles.

In other action, the Como-Pickton Lady Eagles picked up two key wins to keep the playoff chances alive with their season winding down.


Yantis 51, Boles 44

YANTIS - It's been a long time coming, but the Yantis Lady Owls have won a district basketball crown.

Yantis defeated second-place Boles at home 51-44 and now lead the chase with a three-game advantage and only two to play. The Lady Owls raised their season slate to 12-10, but more importantly, stayed spotless in District 18-A with a 6-0 record.

"I am excited for these young ladies," said first-year head coach Jennifer Payne. "They work so hard and hustle all the time. It was a real team victory."

The Lady Owls, with no seniors on the team, led 9-7 after one quarter and 19-17 at intermission. The intensely close game saw Yantis take a 33-32 lead into the final period.

The Lady Owls hit 7-of-10 free throws down the stretch in the final minutes to secure the win.

Amanda Collins and Shelby Allen each hit for 17 points. Yantis' two posts combined for 18 rebounds and dominated the boards. Rachel Spurgeon had 10 rebounds and Blanca Reyna eight. Reyna added seven points with Amanda McKinney and Spurgeon each hitting four and Stephanie Hogg adding two.

The Lady Owls finish the season at home with North Hopkins Friday and Cumby Tuesday.

Como-Pickton 63, Alba-Golden 47

ALBA - Como-Pickton picked up a key district victory over the Alba-Golden Lady Panthers last Friday with a team-high 23 points from Maci Kight.

The Lady Eagles had three other players in double figures led by Rebecca Humphrey with 13 pointers, while Katie Moss and Kaycee Thomas had 11 points each. Mollye Lay added eight points, Shelby Harrison had five points and Jordan Carlock two points.

Hitting 3-pointers were Humphrey (3), Lay (2), Moss and Harrison with one each.

Como-Pickton 59, Quitman 51

COMO - The Lady Eagles evened their District 16-2A record at 5-5 and are tied with the Hawkins Lady Hawks for third place in the district standings following their win Tuesday night.

CPHS took a 21-18 lead at the half and a trailed 41-38 heading into the fourth quarter of play.

Maci Kight scored a team-high 27 points for the Lady Eagles.

Saltillo 54, Fannindel 21

LADONIA - No. 1-ranked Saltillo remained undefeated in District 22-A play as Winter Johnson and Stephanie Methe combined for 25 points.

Johnson scored a game-high 15 points, while Methe added 10 points, all in the first half for the Lady Lions (26-2, 12-0).

Renesia McGee led Fannindel with 13 points.

Yantis 76, Boles 60

YANTIS - The Yantis Owls clinched a playoff spot with a 76-60 shootout over Boles.

Daniel Cerretani had 27 points and seven rebounds, and Randy Smith added a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

The Owls hit 55 percent of their shots for the evening.

"We shot better than we have since the last time we played Boles. All of our kids did a great job and I am proud of them," Yantis coach Larry Tucker said. "We still have a shot at catching NorthHopkins if we can take care of business Friday night."

Also in double figures for Yantis were Terry Thompson and Tony Garcia who both hit for 10 points. Thompson added seven rebounds. Cord Burnett had six points, Jordan Davis five and Houston Tibbs two for the Owls. Davis added seven rebounds and six assists with Burnett and Allen each pitching in four assists.

The Owls are now 5-1, one game behind North Hopkins (6-0). The teams battle in Yantis Friday night.

Saltillo 48, Fannindel 36

LADONIA - The Lions had two players in double-figures behind 14 points from Kenneth Poor and 12 points from Jocsan Gamez to remain undefeated in District 22-A. Saltillo improved to 25-3 overall, 12-0 in district.

The No. 16-ranked Lions trailed 25-19 at the half and held a 36-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Lewis led Fannindel with 14 points.
