SSHS girls space out goals to tie John Tyler
From Staff Reports
Jan. 23, 2008 - TYLER - The Lady Cats went a long time between goals, but got the equalizer with two minutes to play on Tuesday to tie John Tyler, 2-2.
Sophomore Karlie Junot scored her fifth goal in seven games just 80 seconds into the match, played at Tyler Junior College, on an assist from Chelsea English.
It took almost 77 minutes before senior Ana Sanchez took a pass from Arizbeth Garcia on a break-away and tied the game.
"In the first half, we scored so early that it was like we had a letdown after that," said SSHS head coach Martin Bryant. "By the time we had built back up to that, it's halftime and we're behind because we gave up two goals."
At halftime, he said he challenged the Lady Cats (1-5-1) to be more aggressive because the referee was calling a loose game.
"When that happens, you've got to be more aggressive or you're going to get shoved around. We came out in the second half and played really well," Bryant explained. "I would have rather have had a win, obviously, but the way they fought back and tied it up, I was pleased with that."
The Lady Cats, who are off this weekend except for a JV tournament, have two more games before district starts. Bryant said John Tyler;'s style of play was akin to how District 16-4A teams will play.
"John Tyler played quite a bit different than the metroplex schools, but closer to what we'll see in district," he said. "It was a rougher, not as polished style of play, but that's what we've got to get used to."
