Jan. 21, 2008 - After a three-month marathon of a season, area basketball teams are gearing up for the sprint to the finish as their district schedules start winding down.
All girls teams and the smaller classification of boys teams have hit the halfway point of their district schedules and will finish up in two-to-three weeks.
At Sulphur Springs, the girls are in fourth place in District 11-4A after five games. The Lady Cats (10-14, 2-3) trail Lindale by one game in the race for the final playoff spot. They travel to Texarkana on Tuesday to play last-place Texas High.
The SSHS boys will host Texas High on Tuesday as both teams are looking for their first district win. The 11-4A boys started district play a week after the girls, so they still have seven games to play.
In the area districts, state-ranked Saltillo boys (No. 20) and girls (No. 1) continue to lead District 22-A with unbeaten records, with the Miller Grove boys (No. 18) in prime playoff position and the Miller Grove girls just a game out of third place.
The North Hopkins boys and Yantis girls are topping the District 18-A field, with the Yantis and Cumby boys currently in second and third, and the North Hopkins girls in third as well.
In District 16-2A, the Como-Pickton girls are fighting for the third and final playoff spot as they are tied for fourth.
