Saltillo keeps district streaks alive; NH nips Yantis

Jan. 16, 2008 - With both teams ranked in the boys and girls Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, the Saltillo Lions and Lady Lions swept Savoy in basketball action Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, the North Hopkins boys defeated Yantis in an important District 18-A contest.

Girls

Saltillo 45, Savoy 27

SALTILLO - No. 1-ranked Saltillo kept their District 22-A record spotless with a big win over Savoy to start the second half of their district schedule.

The Lady Lions jumped out to a 22-4 lead after the first quarter and held a 27-10 lead at the half.

Jessica Gilbreath scored a game-high 13 points, while Stephanie Methe added 11 points for the Lady Lions.

Saltillo is 22-2 overall, 8-0 in district.

SALTILLO - With their first TABC ranking this season, No. 20 Saltillo remained undefeated in District 22-A with a win over Savoy.

Saltillo held a 35-6 lead after the first quarter, a 61-17 lead at the half and a 81-26 lead after three quarters of play.

Four players scored in double figures for Saltillo, led by 17 points from Kenneth Poor, 15 points from Maikel Groenewold, 14 by Steven Mobley and 10 points by Derek McClure.

Saltillo is now 7-0 in district, 21-3 overall.

North Hopkins 54, Yantis 43

BIRTHRIGHT - Canyon Cockrum scored a game-high 15 points for the North Hopkins Panthers, while Roger Sancho added 13 points in their come-from-behind victory Tuesday night.

Yantis held a 14-6 lead after the first quarter, a 24-16 lead at the half and a 40-30 lead after three quarters of play. North Hopkins outscored Yantis, 24-3, in the final quarter.

"I was proud of our team for playing the whole game and not quitting," said NHHS coach Matt Rager. "We just try to sell out to defense and rebounding and that is what keeps us in the game and gave us a chance to win. The kids stepped up in the fourth quarter and hit some big shots and key free throws."

Yantis was led by Zach Leatherwood with 10 points.
