Wildcats traveling to Dallas Hillcrest today
From Staff Reports
Jan. 14, 2008 - LONGVIEW - The Sulphur Springs Wildcats won't get much rest after a four-game set in the Pine Tree Chik-Fil-A Soccer Tournament last weekend.
The Wildcats will take on Dallas Hillcrest at 7 p.m. today at Franklin Field in Dallas. Hillcrest finished second at a tournament in Denton this weekend.
The Wildcats finished the tournament with a 1-2-1 record after falling 2-1 to Houston MacArthur on Friday evening.
Sulphur Springs senior Tate Ramirez gave SSHS its goal, but MacArthur scored late in the match to take the victory, said SSHS head coach Andy Holt.
"We made one little mental breakdown in that Houston MacArthur game and they scored on us to make it 2-1 with about four minutes left in the game," Holt explained. "We were pushing it up, trying to score and win the game.
"I was happy to see that our kids were trying to give that effort to win."
Holt is still adjusting the lineup, trying to find the best combination. On Friday, he moved Ramirez and Omar Ortiz to center midfielders and Rodrigo Larios to defender and put Bailey Booher at stopper.
"I think you go as the midfield goes, and that's the way it looked the first two games. We weren't putting enough stuff together," Holt said. "I haven't subbed very much, but right now I kind of like what we've got going on right now."
The Wildcats continue their stout pre-district schedule against Hillcrest tonight and then at the Longview tournament this weekend when they will match up against Class 5A teams Longview, Tyler Lee and John Tyler.
"I talked to the kids before we started the season and told them how difficult our schedule was. We're playing teams that have done well in the playoffs," the coach said. "I think our kids responded in the first tournament. I hope we'll do the same tonight and in the tournament this weekend."
