Saltillo boys win battle of unbeatens: NH, Cumby start district off with wins

Jan. 9, 2008 - The Saltillo boys stayed on top of the District 22-A standings Tuesday by beating Miller Grove in a showdown of unbeaten teams. The Saltillo girls also won to keep their district record spotless.

At Union Hill, Cumby senior Kris Stanford had a triple double in the Trojans' 52-44 win.

Meanwhile, the North Hopkins boys opened District 18-A on the right foot with a 27-point victory over Quinlan Boles.


Saltillo 58, Miller Grove 43

MILLER GROVE - Saltillo improved to 6-0 in District 22-A, while the Hornets dropped to 16-6 overall and 5-1 in district in a battle of previously undefeated teams.

Saltillo got out to a 30-14 lead at the half and a 44-31 lead after three quarters of play.

Kenneth Poor led Saltillo with 16 points while Derek McClure added 13.

For the Hornets, Yan Heijligers scored 15 points and Andrew Steele added 12 points.

"We did not compete in the first half. I thought we came out and played during the second half," said MGHS coach Gary Billingsley. "They are very good and also well-coached. I think we got better tonight."

The Hornets will travel to Savoy on Friday, while Saltillo hosts Sulphur Bluff on Thursday.

UNION HILL - Cumby senior Kris Stanford led the way for the Trojans with a triple-double of 26 points, 19 rebounds, 10 steals, six assists and five blocks in their win over Union Hill.

Brian Clem finished with nine points, nine rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Brixx Hawthorne added five points, three rebounds, four assists and five steals for Cumby (1-0 in District 18-A).

Cumby led 31-26 at the half and trailed 39-38 after three quarters of play.

QUINLAN - The Panthers opened district with a convincing victory as three players scored in double figures.

Robert White put in 20 points, Roger Sancho had 14 and Canyon Cockrum scored 11, including three 3-pointers in the third quarter.

NH head coach Matt Rager said White, Sancho and Calvin Brey (six points) helped control the game with their rebounding and low post play.

"Great job by our post players tonight," Rager said. "They controlled the boards, which led to transition offense. Our guards did a great job pushing the ball in our fast break. We have been working in practice on getting out and running our fast break to get easy buckets, and they did a job job of that tonight."

Saltillo 67, Miller Grove 31

MILLER GROVE - No. 1-ranked Saltillo held Miller Grove under 10 points scoring in the first three quarters and took a commanding 42-12 lead at the intermission.

Saltillo's Winter Johnson led the way with a game-high 21 points, while Kimber Thompson scored 16 points and Brooke Lane and Stephanie Methe scored 11 points each.

Miller Grove (10-12, 3-3) had eight points from Ina Jensen and five points from Dianne Sparks.

"They are a very good team and well-coached," said MGHS coach Gary Billingsley. "Hopefully we can learn from this."

The Hornets will travel to Savoy on Friday, while Saltillo hosts Sulphur Bluff on Thursday.

Saltillo is now 20-2 on the season and 6-0 in district.
