Yantis golfers win first at Fork

Feb. 27, 2008 - LAKE FORK - The Yantis Owls Blue golf team defeated several Class 2A and 3A schools in a tournament held at Lake Fork Golf Club on Monday to bring home first place honors with a school record 339.

Senior Cord Burnett, hit a blistering 76, which is a school record. Kenny Nunez shot a 78. Teammates Darren Burgess (90), Houston Tibbs (98) and Cory Ward (101) finished out the field.

"We have worked extremely hard and are looking forward to our district tournament in a few weeks," Yantis coach Michael Alphin said. "I am really proud of these young men and the time they put into practice and reaching team and indidvidual goals."

Finishing second was Leonard at 344, and third place was Commerce at 352. Other teams were from Chapel Hill, Caddo Mills, Dallas Life Charter and Rivercrest.

On Feb. 18, the Owls won first place at Mount Pleasant. Being the only Class A school in the event, they played in the JV division with mostly 2A schools.

Nunez shot an 80 to lead the Owls with Burnett shooting 89, Tibbs 96, Burgess 98 and Ward 105. The team total was 363.
