Soccer girls shut out Pleasant Grove
From Staff Reports
Feb. 24, 2008 - TEXARKANA - The offensive surge continued Friday night for the Sulphur Springs girls soccer team, and head coach Martin Bryant hopes that gives them confidence as they face the district's top two teams this week.
On Friday, the Lady Cats blasted Pleasant Grove 5-0, with sophomore Karlie Junot scoring three goals. Combined with the four-goal match against Texas High on Tuesday, Junot scored seven times this week.
Junior Brittany Lamphere and senior Amanda Stoutenberg also had one goal each, while Kelsey Cullins contributed two assists, and Jentri Broumley, Nellie Aguilar and Lamphere had one helper apiece.
Junot scored her first goal about 10 minutes into the match, and the Lady Cats took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
"At the half, we talked about specific things we needed to work on like moving the ball back and forth," Bryant said. "We were able to do that in the second half, and we scored four more goals in the second half.
"As a team, we played really well. I can't really say that so-and-so stood out. I thought as a group, collectively, we worked the ball well."
The win keeps the Lady Cats (2-3) in fourth place in District 16-4A, one game behind Mount Pleasant for third place. The Lady Cats must travel to play second place Paris tonight, then face district-leading North Lamar on the road on Saturday.
"The bottom line is that we're still in a position where we can control whether or not we get in the playoffs," Bryant said. "We're confident, and we understand that if we do the little things we talk about all the time, it's the difference in the game.
"Hopefully, we can carry that on against a little stiffer competition tonight. With the pressure on, hopefully we'll respond well."
Kickoff for tonight's match is 5:30 p.m. for JV and 7 p.m. for varsity at Noyes Stadium.
