Familiar Faces: Alumni softball scrimmage may become annual event
From Staff Reports
Feb. 24, 2008 - Former SSHS softball players and coaches united with the current varsity team under beautiful skies on Saturday, Feb. 9, to play in an alumni game at Lady Cat Park.
Eight alumni players participated, along with former coaches Rick Cook and John McCullough. The alumni team also borrowed two varsity players, pitcher Taylor Clifton and catcher Maurie Lewis, and assistant coach Eric Buck.
Alumni players were Brandi Bell (2001 graduate), Robin Boshears (2002), Maegan Bell (2003), Holly Watson (2004), Whitney Gideon (2004), Tanna Lampp (2005), Stephanie Kethley (2005), and assistant coach Kendra Trantham (Mount Vernon, 1999).
The varsity team consisted of Kaci Kennedy, Baylee Speaker, Malory Rawson, JaMonica Hall, Katie Dodd, Kelsey Evans, Krista McMahan, Brittani Crawford, Jenna Davis, Mac Morgan, Amanda McGowin, Phoebe Rutledge and Breanna Mills. They were coached by David Carrillo and Michelle Barron. Umpires were Heath Anderson, Robert Cook and Porter Woods.
Throughout the game, the coaches would say words of encouragement that players on both teams had heard many times from them, such as "The ducks are on the pond. Rock and fire. Watch that pitch. Pick your pitch. Swing level, and You can do it."
Plans are being made to have another alumni game at the beginning of the 2009 season on the second weekend in February. Organizers and coaches hope more alumni members will participate.
