McLeod eliminates Trojans from playoffs

Three other county teams look to advance in postseason tonight

Feb. 19, 2008 - GLADEWATER - The Cumby Trojans opened up the Class A, Division I bi-district round of the playoffs with a 82-66 loss to the McLeod Longhorns Monday night.

McLeod took a 17-11 lead heading into the second quarter, 34-19 lead at the half and extended its lead to 35 points (66-31) heading into the fourth quarter. The Trojans (10-12) outscored McLeod, 35-16, in the fourth quarter and pulled the game to within 11 points with a minute to go but could not get any closer.

Senior post Kris Stanford led the way for Cumby with 27 points, nine rebounds, two blocks, three assists and two steals, while Brian Clem added 16 points, nine rebounds, one block and one steal. Nick Newsom added 11 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two assists for the Trojans.

Stanford hit five 3-pointers in the game as the team went 8-of-30 from behind the arc, while Newsom hit two 3-pointers and Hawthorne hit one for the Trojans. They also went 23-of-69 from the field and 12-of-19 from the free throw line. The Trojans had 29 turnovers in the game and five blocked shots.

McLeod (18-12) was led in scoring by Grayson Porter with 26 points, Rem Dunlap with 15, Dusty Harris with 13 points and Luke Derrough with 11 points.

McLeod advances to the area round to play Mount Enterprise Friday with the time and site to be determined.

The playoff continue for three other county teams tonight.

The Miller Grove boys, who finished second in District 22-A, will open their playoff Class A, Div. II journey tonight when they take on Waxahachie Cornerstone at 6 p.m. at Rockwall Heath.

The Yantis boys, also, will open the playoffs tonight when they take on Bloomburg at 7:30 p.m. in Gladewater in Class A, Div. I action. Yantis was runner-up in District 18-A.

In girls action, No. 1-ranked Saltillo will have a rematch of last year's Class A, Div. II regional quarterfinal game when they take on No. 6 Kennard at 7 p.m. today at Kilgore College. Saltillo is coming off a 64-25 victory over Gary, while Kennard beat Dodd City, 41-34.

The winner will advance to the Region III tournament at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches on Friday and Saturday.
