Chewing It Up: Lady Cats win softball opener with ease

From Staff Reports

Feb. 13, 2008 - ATHENS - Before their first game on Tuesday, SSHS softball coach David Carrillo told his players a story about early settlers conquering inhabited lands. To prove his point, he drew a ship on a piece of paper, then crumpled the paper up and tossed it in his mouth.

In response, the Lady Cats then went out and chewed up the Athens Lady Hornets, 15-1.

Sophomore Taylor Clifton struck out eight and gave up six hits in holding

Athens to one earned run while the Lady Cats played errorless ball behind her.

Offensively, junior Breanna Mills had three hits, including a pair of doubles, sophomore JaMonica Hall scored three runs while getting a pair of hits, and four other players had two hits each.

"I thought we did a great job of coming out ready to play because it's always important to win that first one," said Carrillo. "We did a great job. We hit the ball, didn't make any errors - it was a team effort. We did everything I expected us to do in our first game."

Sulphur Springs scored in every inning but the third, and used nine runs in the final two innings to end the game on the mercy rule.

In the first inning, Katie Dodd, who had two hits, rapped a two-run single to left field, scoring Mac Morgan and Krista McMahan to give the Lady Cats a 2-0 advantage.

Athens responded with its only run of the game when the lead-off hitter doubled to left and scored on a two-out single. Between Clifton's pitching and the throwing of sophomore catcher Maurie Lewis, who gunned down 3-of-4 would-be base-stealers, Athens left just four baserunners.

SSHS added a run in the second inning on Hall's double and an RBI single by Morgan, then put up three more runs in the fourth when Mills, Hall and Kelsey Evans all scored, two of them off McMahan's two-run single.

In the fifth, Mills had a two-run double and Lewis added an RBI single to plate three more runs. Then, in the sixth, Dodd and Lewis each scored on a two-run single by Amanda McGowin, and a two-run single by Jenna Davis plated Hall and Evans.

Carrillo was pleased with the aggressiveness of his team, which struck out just twice while pounding out 16 hits and earning five walks.

"It's been kind of hit-and-miss with our practices because of the weather, but we looked pretty sharp yesterday," he said. "I told them, 'Let's go play to win this game instead of just letting things happen,' and we took it to them."

The Lady Cats will host their inaugural softball tournament starting Thursday and going through Saturday. Carrillo loaded up games on Thursday in hopes of getting as many in before foul weather is expected at the end of the week.

The tournament will have a Div. I bracket and a Div. II bracket.
