From Staff Reports
Feb. 12, 2008 - GREENVILLE - The Sulphur Springs tennis team claimed three firsts, two seconds, a fourth and one consolation title at the Greenville Ace Tennis Tournament on Friday at the GHS and Greenville Middle School Courts.
"This was an excellent momentum builder for our team," said SSHS tennis coach James Lovett. "It is a very positive beginning to our season and was something that we needed to get our team off to a great start. At this point, we needed our players to do really well, and I was pleasantly surprised at the results. I am looking forward to the rest of the season and we have a lot of work to do until district play."
Two Sulphur Springs mixed doubles team faced off in the finals as Aly Jackson and Jacob Hardin defeated Josh Stoltenberg and Shelby Carter, 6-1, 6-2. In boys doubles, the team of Robert Stevens and Zach Adams defeated Baucom/Taylor of Paris, 6-0, 6-1, while Sulphur Springs' Cade Winborn and Chaz Hinkeldey beat Stevens/Reel of Royse City, 8-5, in the consolation round.
"I was ecstatic with our mixed doubles results, and the team is pulling together and playing well together right now," the coach said. "Everybody is excited right now about playing on the team, and this is the direction we need to be headed in. Hopefully, it is the beginning of something a lot better."
In boys singles action, SSHS junior Jordan Horne defeated Adam Lubin of Paris, 6-1, 6-4 to claim the tournament title, while Dakota Painter finished fourth with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Marty Spann of Paris.
"Dakota was in on the third place game and lost in a tie-breaker at the end, and that was a disappointment for him to get fourth," Lovett said. "I was excited that he got fourth place for the team."
In girls singles, SSHS senior Morgan McCormack finished in second place as Nona Sirkova of Commerce won 6-1, 6-2, while Karen Mora won the consolation title with a 8-6 win of Paris' Victoria Huggins.
"She (McCormack) played a very good girl from Commerce, and she did very well against her, but that girl was a great tennis player," the coach said. "That was great for all of them because some of them I didn't expect to place that high, and I proud of the whole team."
The tennis team returns to action on Feb. 29-March 1 with a match at Robert E. Lee in Tyler.
