Cumby girls open playoffs tonight

Feb. 12, 2008 - The Cumby Lady Trojans will be in action tonight in the opening round of the UIL girls basketball playoffs, while Yantis and Saltillo wait their turn.
The Lady Trojans, who finished as runners-up in District 18-A, Div. I, behind Yantis, will take on Detroit, the third place team in District 17-A, at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Sulphur Bluff.
The winner of the game will advance to take on No. 1-ranked Martins Mill, the state runner-up last year.
Yantis and Saltillo, the District 22-A, Div. II champion, both received first-round byes in the playoffs after winning their districts. The area round of the playoffs will be Thursday through Saturday.
Yantis will play LaPoynor, the 20th-ranked team in the state which finished as runner-up to Martins Mill in District 19-A. LaPoynor defeated Beckville 53-30 on Monday in bi-district. The date, time and site for the area game has not yet been finalized.
Saltillo, meanwhile, will take on the winner between Neches and Gary in the area round. Saltillo is ranked No. 1 in Class A, Div. II, and appear to be on another collision course in the regional quarterfinals to meet No. 6 Kennard, the state runner-up who knocked the Lady Lions out of the playoffs last year.
In other area games, No. 3-ranked Winnsboro, the state runner-up in Class 2A last season, also received a first-round bye and will take on Aubrey in the area round. Lone Oak, the District 12-2A champion, received a bye and will play Brock.
In Class 3A, Mount Vernon defeated Gladewater 64-43 on Monday in bi-district and will play Crandall next. Rains, the 10-3A champion, will play Carrollton Ranchview in the area round.
In Class 4A, Mount Pleasant and Lindale are both in action tonight. Mount Pleasant, the 11-4A runner-up, will take on Whitehouse at 7:30 p.m. in Gladewater. Lindale, the third-place team in 11-4A, will play Kilgore at 7:30 p.m. at Tyler Junior College.
North Lamar, ranked No. 9 in the state, will play the winner between Lake Dallas and Rockwall Heath in the area round.
