Moving Up: Wildcats reclaim second place in district with shutout of Texas High
From Staff Reports
Feb. 11, 2008 - TEXARKANA - The Sulphur Springs Wildcats moved back into second place in the District 16-4A soccer standings with a solid 3-0 shutout of Texas High on Saturday.
The Wildcats improved to 3-1 in district with a nine points. They are one point ahead of North Lamar and three points ahead of Pittsburg, which is tied with Paris for fourth place. Sulphur Springs hosts Pittsburg on Tuesday and North Lamar on Friday.
Two victories would keep the Wildcats within striking distance of district-leading Mount Pleasant (4-0, 12 points), while putting some distance between Sulphur Springs and the rest of the district.
"This week is going to kind of determine if we can win and separate ourselves from those other guys," said SSHS head coach Andy Holt. "We're playing pretty good soccer right now. Even when we got beat by Mount Pleasant, we played pretty good. It was a good effort for 80 minutes. We've played well the last few games."
That includes Saturday, when goal keeper Mario Arellano maintained a shutout and three different Wildcats put in goals. The Wildcats got scores from Cruz Lozano, Oscar Marroquin and Leo Becerra and assists from Omar Ortiz and Bailey Booher.
"It was a great day to play soccer, and our kids played well from the opening whistle to the last," Holt said. "We played smart, controlled the ball well and created several opportunities."
Lozano scored the first goal after the T-High keeper deflected a shot by Ortiz from about 25-30 yards out, but didn't control the ball. Lozano finished it off to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Marroquin scored his first goal of the year on a header from a pass sent by Booher from the side. Booher took the ball down the line before playing in to Marroquin.
Becerra had the final goal on a backside, top-shelf shot from the top of the 18-yard box.
The Wildcats and Pittsburg will play tomorrow at Prim Stadium with the JV starting action at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity to kickoff at about 7:15.
