Lady Cats 3-0 after sweep of Clarksville

Aug. 20, 2008 - CLARKSVILLE - So far, so good for the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats.

Three games in non-district play have net three wins for the varsity volleyball team.

Tuesday night in Clarksville, they dominating the home-standing Lady Tigers winning in a three-game sweep by scores of 25-11, 25-8, 29-27.

"This was the first time since I have been coaching at Sulphur Springs that we have been able to win in three straight games," said head volleyball coach Rachel Curtis.

Curtis said her unselfish squad seems to be coming up with a new star in each game with all players are contributing to the success of the team.

"Mackenzie Cross led the team in kills. We averaged nine kills a game against Clarksville," Curtis said. "I was proud of how we played. We took control early and didnot let them back in it. We kind of struggled in the last game, but we hung on to win."

In the first game, Cross served for 12 straight points. Spencer Martin added two service points while Krista McMahan and Baleigh Butler had one service ace each.

The second game saw Brittani Crawford's booming jump serve get two aces as she strung together seven points in a row off serves. Cross served for four points in a row with one ace. McMahan also had four serves in a row while Maurie Lewis had three points off consecutive serves.

"We had been struggling with serves," Curtis admitted. "We put an emphasis on it. We really served well against Clarksville, we just missed four serves in the first two games."

In the third game, McMahan and Lewis each served for three consecutive points.

"We played good defense. We were in good position, we only had three drops," Curtis said. "I was glad to see the girls step up. We took care of our business. Now we get to play in the Terrell Tournament and see how we match up against some teams from that area."

The Lady Cats will play in the tournament Friday and Saturday. On Friday they will in pool play with three games slated. They take on Hillcrest at 9 a.m. followed by a noon game against Kaufman and a 2 p.m. contest against Lakeview Centennial. Sulphur Springs will play Saturday in bracket action.

The home game for the Lady Cats is Tuesday against North Lamar. The freshmen play at 4:30 p.m.followed by the JV at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7:30 p.m.
