SSMS girls win second straight district track championship

April 30, 2008 - MOUNT PLEASANT - The Sulphur Springs eighth-grade girls recently won the District 11-4A track and field championship for the second consecutive year, racking up 179 points.

The Lady Cats won gold medals in five different events, led by Ayana Taylor, who won two individual events and a relay gold, and Mariah Kendricks, who had an individual win and was part of the winning sprint relay team.

Taylor won the long jump and triple jump, and was followed by Abby Grand-Lienard, who was second in both events. Grand-Lienard also was part of the 4x200 relay team, which was second, took third in the 300-hurdles and was fourth in the 100.

In the sprint relay, Taylor, Kendricks, Gracie Cable and Katie Dougan won the event in a time of 53.65 seconds. Other winners were Kendricks in the shot put and Simmons in the discus.

Taking silver medals were Lori Baldridge in the 2,400, Alex Darden in the 100 hurdles, the 4x200 relay team of Cable, Grand-Lienard, Taylor and Dougan, and the 4x400 team of Cable, Taylor, Darden and Reagan Humphrey.

The seventh-grade team finished third in district, with one gold medal relay team of Daiza Jackson, Yasmin Hart, Labrandis Adams and Samira Younger winning the 4x200. Megan McCullough won two bronze medals in the triple jump and high jump, Jessica Spivey was second in the discus, Shardae Harrison placed third in the 100 hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles, and Jackson was third in the 100-meter dash.
