April 29, 2008 - The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats know who they will play in the area round of the softball playoffs, but they don't know where yet.
The Lady Cats will meet up with the Forney Lady Rabbits on Friday and Saturday in a best-of-three series. But, the site was undetermined as of Tuesday morning.
The teams at first arranged to play at Rockwall High School, but that field ended up being unavailable. So, they tried Rockwall Heath, but that site fell through, too. So, the coaches will look for an alternate site or will play a home-and-home series.
SSHS coach David Carrillo said the teams agreed to play at 7 p.m. Friday and at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (with Game 3 to follow, if necessary). The problem is to find a quality field that is available at those times.
The early start time on Saturday is because Sulphur Springs has its junior-senior prom Saturday night.
Sulphur Springs (23-9) is coming off a two-game sweep of Marshall in its bi-district series, 6-0 and 15-5. Forney (24-5), meanwhile, shared the District 10-4A title with Mesquite Poteet and won a coin flip to become the top seed.
The Lady Rabbits have won 15 of their last 16 games and posted 11 shutouts in that span.
The two teams met earlier this year in a pre-district game played at Sulphur Springs, and Forney won 8-6.
In other District 11-4A action, Whitehouse beat Lindale 5-1 in bi-district, while district champion North Lamar received a bye and will now play Mesquite Poteet in a best-of-three series Friday and Saturday in McKinney.
In other area games, North Hopkins girls received a first-round playoff bye after winning District 17-A and will play Joaquin in the area round. The game's date, time and place is undetermined.
The Sulphur Springs Wildcats (14-10) will play host to Kilgore (15-11) on Friday in a one-game bi-district playoff. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at Eagle Stadium.
The Wildcats finished as runner-up in District 11-4A, while Kilgore is the No. 3 seed in 12-4A.
In other District 11-4A match-ups, Lindale will play Hallsville Friday and Saturday, while district champion Texas High has a bye.
Around Hopkins County, Cumby, Saltillo, Yantis and North Hopkins all qualified for the playoffs.
Cumby, the runner-up in District 17-A, will take on Avery in a best-of-three series set for Mount Pleasant. Game 1 is 6 p.m. Friday, with Game 2 to start at 3 p.m. Saturday. Game 3 will follow Game 2, if necessary.
Saltillo, the third-place team in 17-A, will play Maud in a best-of-three series in Gilmer. Game 1 is 6 p.m. Friday, with Game 2 set for 1 p.m. Saturday; Game 3 will follow, if necessary.
Yantis, the runner-up in District 19-A, will play Beckville at 7 p.m. Friday at Kilgore's Driller Park.
North Hopkins received a first-round bye as the champion of 17-A.
