Cadena, Wilder are on their way to state

April 28, 2008 - NACOGDOCHES - Needing to finish in the top two in their respective events this past weekend, North Hopkins distance runner Jose Cadena and Sulphur Bluff distance runner Everett Wilder advanced to state at the Class A, Region III meet held at Stephen F. Austin State University.

The two runners will represent Hopkins County at the UIL State Track and Field meet on May 9-10 in Austin.

Cadena and Wilder finished in first and second place, respectively, in the 3,200-meter run as Cadena crossed the line in a time of 10 minutes, 19.47 seconds, while Wilder ran a 10:26.41.

In the 1,600 meters, Cadena was third with a time of 4:40.76, while Wilder finished in fourth place with a clocking of 4:41.84. Sulphur Bluff's Trey Henderson was eighth in the 1,600 meters. Henderson also ran in the 800-meters and finished in sixth place at 2:08.31.

North Hopkins senior distance runner Jessi Mannis missed out on her fourth straight state meet as she finished third in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs. Mannis finished the 1,600 meters in a time of 5:38.84 and ran a 12:21.96 in the 3,200.

Miller Grove senior Stormy Combs was eighth in the 3,200 meters with a time of 13:23.79.

For Cumby, Savanah Neal was seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.63 seconds, while teammate Ariel Parker was sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 51.51 seconds.

On the boys side, North Hopkins senior Roger Sancho just missed out on a trip to state in the 300-meter hurdles as he finished third in a time of 40.82 seconds.Cumby's Brixx Hawthorne was sixth place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.98 seconds.

For Saltillo, senior Stephanie Methe was sixth in the discus at 99-1, while North Hopkins Courtney Loper was eighth with a throw of 90-7.

Sulphur Bluff's Dillan Horn finished tied for seventh in the pole vault at 10-6.
