Yantis boys swing for state
From Staff Reports
April 23, 2008 - NACOGDOCHES - The Yantis Owl boys Blue golf team is headed to the UIL state tournament for the first time in school history. The Owls increased their 12-stroke Monday lead and parlayed it into a 26-stroke win over Lindsey.
The Owls White team finished in ninth place in the 16-team field. The Lady Owls ended the tournament with a 12th-place finish.
"I can't say enough about these young men and ladies. They were great on and off the course. Our goal since our third-place finish last year was to come back and win the region and go to state," coach Michael Alphin said. "The Blue team's hard work has really paid off. We got a lot of compliments about our kids and their respectful behavior during the tournament."
The Owls had a two-day total of 684 followed by Lindsey's 710 and defending state champion LaPoyner's third place finish at 758.
Senior Cord Burnett led the Owls with a 165 (80-85), good enough for a fourth-place individual finish. Darren Burgess finished 11th at 172 (83-88); Kenny Nunez 12th at 173 (86-86), Daniel Cerretani 17th at 177 (86-91) and Carl Jordan 29th at 188 (98-90). White team member Houston Tibbs shot a 188 (97-91) to tie Jordan at 29th place.
Tibbs led the White team's charge on the second day, followed by Cory Ward with 212, Terry Thompson 215, Jordan Davis 225 and Justin Hunt 239. There were 116 golfers in the boy's competition.
The Yantis girls were led by Amanda McKinney's 18th-place finish and 215 total, followed by Rachel Spurgeon at 246, Bailey Hunt 256 and Shelby Allen 290 in the two-day affair.
"I am really proud of Coach Alphin and all of the kids. The golf program at Yantis is obviously one of the best in the state," Yantis athletic director Larry Tucker said. "There is a lot of support from the administration and the parents. We appreciate that very much. Winning is great, but the best thing was the way our kids conducted themselves in victory, with class and integrity."
The Yantis Blue team will join seven other teams from throughout Texas in Austin on May 5-6 to battle for the state crown. The state tournament will be played at Morris Williams Golf Course in Austin.
