Owls are 18 holes away from state golf berth

April 22, 2008 - NACOGDOCHES - The Yantis Owl Blue team leads the Class A, Region III golf tournament by 12 strokes over Lindsay after the first day of competition at Piney Woods Country Club.

The Owls are at 335, followed by Lindsay's 347, with Muenster in third at 369, followed by defending state champion LaPoyner at 372.

The final round will be played today, with the top two teams and the top two individuals not on those teams advancing to the state tournament. The Owls appear well on their way to qualifying for state, which will be played May 5-6 at the Morris Williams Golf Course in Austin.

Individually, Cord Burnett fired an 80, good enough to be tied for second place overall behind Grapeland's Ruston Boyd who shot a 75.

Also for Yantis, Darren Burgess is tied for sixth overall at 83 with teammates Daniel Cerretani and Kenny Nunez tied for 14th at 86. Carl Jordan shot 98.

The Yantis White team ended the first day tied for 10th place with Brookeland at a score of 434.

Houston Tibbs posted a 97 with Terry Thompson hitting for a 109, Cory Ward 110, Jordan Davis 118 and Justin Hunt 120.
