Lady Cats complete first regional round in 10th place

April 22, 2008 - DENTON - The Sulphur Springs girls shot a steady 405 Monday in the opening round of the Class 4A, Region II golf tournament, putting them in 10th spot going into today's final round.

The Lady Cats had hoped to break 400 at Robson Ranch Golf Course in Denton, just barely missing their goal.

SSHS junior Britney Cheatham, the District 11-4A medalist, shot an 87, which put in a tie for 16th place individually. She is six strokes out of a trip to the state tournament, set for May 5-6 at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.

The top two teams and top two individuals not on those teams advance to the state tournament. Highland Park (311) and Frisco (341) lead the team standings and also have four of the top five individual golfers.

After the first day, the top medalists not on Highland Park or Frisco teams were Carly Dear of Red Oak (78) and three golfers tied at 81.

SSHS sophomore Miranda Conway came in with a 98 after the first day, junior Kaitlyn Potts shot a 103, sophomore Dani Johnson carded a 117 and freshman Kaley Perry had a 129.

On top of the individual leaderboard are Highland Park's Lila Barton with a 2-under par 70 and her teammate Steffi Scholer with a 76.

The regional tournament's final 18 holes will be played today.
