Top of the List: Hutchings leads SSHS girls soccer nominees

April 22, 2008 - SSHS girls soccer coach Martin Bryant started more underclassmen than he did seniors this season, but he certainly depended on the seniors who did earn playing time.

That showed up in the All-District 16-4A Team, as Sulphur Springs senior D'Kota Hutchings was the top player for the Lady Cats in the eyes of the district's coaches as they voted her First Team defender.

The Lady Cats have four Second Team players: sophomore striker Karlie Junot, junior midfielder Bonnie Grafton, junior defender Brittany Lamphere and sophomore goal keeper Macey Hurley. Honorable Mention went to senior forward Ana Sanchez, senior defender Crysel Garcia and junior defender Jentri Broumley.

"D'Kota was a clear choice for that First Team defender spot," Bryant said. "For what she did for us, she definitely deserved her award.

"I felt the ones receiving awards were definitely deserving of it. For as young as we were, to put eight players on the All-District team is a plus."

Hutchings was the backbone of the SSHS defense and would press up at times to get in on the offensive push. She scored four goals on 11 shots.

Junot was the team's top scorer as she put in 12 goals and had two assists, and she also played the most minutes of all the SSHS players.

Grafton, who has received an All-District award each of the last two seasons, had four goals and a team-high seven assists.

Lamphere was another top defender for the Lady Cats, evidenced by her team-high 11 fouls. She also had two goals and four assists.

Hurley took over in goal this season and had one shutout in 10 district games. Her save percentage was 75.8.

Sanchez added four goals for the Lady Cats, while Garcia and Broumley were part of the Lady Cat defense and accounted for a combined three goals and four assists.

Paris senior Ali Ryan was named the district's Most Valuable Player after leading the Lady Cats to the district crown.
