JV tennis brings home one medal
From Staff Reports
April 17, 2008 - LINDALE - In its final tournament of the season, the Sulphur Springs junior varsity tennis team won a silver medal in mixed doubles at the District 11-4A tournament on Wednesday.
The team of Garrett Swattsell and Katie Moore defeated a team from Texas High to win the silver medal, while Luke Penny finished in fourth place with an 8-6 loss to a player from Texas High in boys singles.
"We did quite well with the junior varsity as we took 16 kids to the match," said first-year coach James Lovett. "All of our boys and girls made it to the second round of the tournament and did quite well, but overall I was extremely pleased. We are playing very well with teams like Texas High."
The boys doubles team of Dakota Painter and Dillon Smith were defeated in the quarterfinals against Texas High, while the girls doubles team of Alejandra Lira and Karen Mora were defeated in the quarterfinals by a team from Lindale.
"Our defeats were very close against every team and player we faced," the coach said. "We are taking games and sets that we weren't doing at the beginning of the year."
He said overall he was pleased with how his junior varsity improved during the fall and spring seasons.
"I am very excited about what I see for next year. We have a very fine group of players coming back next year," he said. "Our freshmen and sophomore groups are very good. All I can see is very positive things from this group next year when they move up to the varsity level.
"We are getting so much better and they are well poised and wanting to work harder when they come out on the court. We are headed in the right direction, and I can't wait for the fall season to start."
