Are You Ready For Some Football?

2008 SSHS schedule is released with a few changes from the ordinary

April 13, 2008 - The Sulphur Springs Wildcats' 2008 football schedule has been released, and, as expected, there are a few changes.

The Wildcats will have six home games, play a Thursday night game, and will have a bye week during their District 13-3A schedule.

The most high-profile non-district game will come Thursday, Sept. 11, against Wichita Falls Rider at Gerald Prim Stadium. The game will feature two of the nation's top quarterbacks - Wildcat senior Tyrik Rollison and Rider senior Shevodrick Beaver.

Both quarterbacks are ranked in the top five in the nation by recruiting expert Rivals.com.

"That's a pretty exciting game," said SSHS head coach Greg Owens. "We're playing quality opponents - these guys are the real deal. Rider will probably be a top 10 team."

Since the varsity teams are playing on Thursday that week, the freshmen and JV teams will play Rider on Friday at Denton Ryan High School's field.

The Wildcats will have four non-district games - the only one on the road will be an old-time rival but a newly-discovered nemesis, Whitehouse. That game will be Sept. 5 and will christen renovations at Whitehouse's stadium, which is getting Field Turf and a new scoreboard this offseason.

Other non-district games will be against former district rival Paris to open the season on Aug. 29, and homecoming against Mesquite Poteet on Sept. 19. The freshmen/JV games will be split against Poteet with the freshmen playing at home and the JV meeting Poteet at Mesquite's A.C. New Middle School field.

The Wildcats will then open District 13-3A at Longview Pine Tree on Sept. 26, followed by a home game against Longview and a road trip to Texas High. Following a bye on Oct. 17, the Wildcats will host Mount Pleasant, travel to Marshall and then host Hallsville on Nov. 7 in the season finale.

Sulphur Springs will have two preseason scrimmages, Aug. 16 at home against Greenville, and Aug. 22 at Terrell.

The Wildcats could be facing up to five teams that could be ranked sometime during the season - Whitehouse and Rider in non-district, and Longview, Marshall and Texas High in the 13-3A schedule.

"It's going to be a big time, and I think our kids will be ready for the challenge," Owens said. "I know they're working their tails off right now to prepare. We've had a great track season this year, the guys are in the weight room getting stronger,

"They're starting to get excited about getting outside and doing some outside drills. We'll test next week and then start getting on the grass two or three days a week and still be lifting a couple of days."

With six home games instead of the normal five, season ticket prices will likely be adjusted when they go on sale in August. In 2009, there will be just four home games.

Last year, season tickets were a virtual sell-out.

"It'll be an exciting time for us," Owens said. "There will be a lot of games played here. Last year, I think we sold all of our season tickets, and we hope that continues."

The first day for two-a-day football practices is Aug. 4.
