Scholarship to be awarded in memory of Casey McMahan
From Staff Reports
April 13, 2008 - Friends, family and fans of former Wildcat Casey McMahan will help other athletes go to college in the form of the Casey McMahan Scholarship, which will be awarded to a Sulphur Springs High School senior starting this spring.
McMahan, a 2006 SSHS graduate and member of the district championship baseball team, died last month.
In his memory, the Casey McMahan Scholarship Fund was started at Guaranty Bond Bank, said family friend Monica Littlefield. Proceeds from the fund will go toward a $500 scholarship this year to a graduating senior on the SSHS baseball team.
The deadline to apply this year is April 30, and the winner will be announced at the SSHS awards assembly in May.
In future years, Littlefield said the scholarship will be opened to all SSHS varsity athletes. Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA and write an essay on what the scholarship will mean to them. Need will also be taken into account, she said.
The scholarship committee also intends to have baseball tournaments in the upcoming years to add to the fund. Donations are still being accepted at Guaranty Bond Bank as well.
