SS girls win district golf in a landslide

From Staff Reports

April 8, 2008 - LINDALE - The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats went into the final round of the District 11-4A golf tournament without anyone within shouting distance of them.

Monday, they put even more space between themselves and the rest of the field, cruising to the district championship with a 170-stroke lead over second place and with three girls among the top five individuals.

The youthful SSHS boys team stayed in fifth place on the final round, shooting a collective 338. Lindale won the boys division.

Junior Britney Cheatham had the best two rounds of the tournament, matching the 85 she put up last week on her home course with another 85 Monday at Hide-A-Way Lake Golf Course.

She finished with a collective 271 to win the medalist title by 19 strokes over Mount Pleasant's Katy Webster, who shot a 90.

Junior Kaitlyn Potts finished fourth with a 302 after a 97 on Monday - her best score of the three district rounds - and sophomore Miranda Conway carded a 105 to total 305 and finish fifth.

Sophomore Dani Johnson had a 112 and freshman Kaley Perry carded a 120. Johnson finished ninth in the individual standings with a 349 total.

Overall, the Lady Cats finished with a three-day score of 1,223 to outdistance North Lamar's 1,393 total. The top two teams and top two individuals not on those teams - in this case it is Webster and Paris' Ali Ryan - qualify for regional.

The SSHS JV squad finished in seventh place overall and second among JV teams. Kayle Askins (113 on Monday), Megan Sickles (111) and Jamie Askins (128) were among the top 20 individuals.

The Wildcats had one player among the top 20 as sophomore Adam Perry fired an 81 on Monday to finish in ninth individually with a 239 three-day total.

Perry needed to make up five strokes to get into a regional qualifying score, but came up short. Sophomore Cort Walker shot an 85 on his final round to come in 22nd with a 258 total.

Freshman Cameron Wilks fired an 82, while classmate Chance Byrd had a 98 and sophomore Cole Cable shot a 90. Cable had a 272 total, while Byrd finished with a 277.

The Wildcats shot a 238 on Monday to finish with a 1,017. Lindale won the tournament with an excellent 911 score and Texas High was second at 950. Texas High's Cabe Prieskorn won the individual title with a 215 after shooting 70 on Monday. Lindale's Stetson McMillan fired a 69, the lowest score of the day, to finish one stroke back in second.

"We had a decent round. It was right there in the 330 round that we had shot the first two rounds of district," said SSHS coach Ross Funk. "We were pretty consistent, unfortunately we weren't as good as we needed to be. We placed fifth, and I think for a young team, that's pretty good."

On the JV squad, Josh Gaines shot a 109 for the lowest third-round score. He was followed closely by Heath Hanna with a 110 and Mason Smolik with a 111. Cody Morgan shot a 115 and Parker Sims a 134.
