Como-Pickton's Stinson heading to regional for fourth straight year

April 6, 2008 - GRAND SALINE - The Como-Pickton Eagles advanced 14 athletes to the regional track and field meet in Palestine April 25-26 by placing in the top three at the District 16-2A track and field meet on Wednesday and Thursday.


The varsity girls team finished in third place in the team standings as nine athletes advanced.

Senior Bethanie Stinson will be making her fourth consecutive trip to the regional meet after winning both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs in times of 5:28 and 12:23, respectively.

The 4x200-meter relay team of Jordan Carlock, Tulleah Bozeman, Skye Brumley and Samantha Jones placed third. The 4x400 relay team of Manon Schakel, Julia Chance, Jones and Carlock also advanced to the regional meet with a third-place finish.

Maggie Ledesma finished fifth in the 800 meters.

In the field events, Maci Kight advanced to regionals with a second-place finish in the discus, while Deanna Garrett was third in the pole vault and Schakel was third in the triple jump as they both advanced to regionals.

Breanna Peoples was sixth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump, while Samantha Jones was fourth in the triple jump.

For the boys, Ole Gutierrez placed third in the 3,200-meters, while the 4x200 relay took third and the 4x400 relay placed second and will advance to regional. Both relays are composed of Aaron Kramer, Juan Bautista, Brandt Steele and James Carter.

Carter also placed fourth in the high jump, sixth in the long jump and fifth in the 200 meters, while Kramer was fifth in the 300 meter hurdles. Dustin Flowers finished fourth in the pole vault, while Ryan Carpenter and Hunter Cooksey were fifth and sixth in the 110 hurdles.

Alfredo Mejia was fourth in the 800 meters and sixth in the 400 meters, while Gutierrez was fourth in the 1,600 meters.

Junior Varsity

Hunter Cain led the boys team with a first-place finish in the 3,200 meters and a second-place finish in the 1,600 meters at the district meet.

Cain also ran a leg on the 4x100-meter relay team along with Miguel Mejia, Zack Hankins and Austin Darby as they finished in sixth place.

The 4x200 relay team of Mejia, Fabian Hernandez, Dylan Mowat and Darby finished in fifth place, while the 4x400 team of Mejia, Hernandez, Spencer Freeman and Darby finished fourth. Freeman rounded out the running events with a sixth place finish in the 110-meter hurdles.

In the field events, Mowat was third in the shot put, fourth in the long jump and sixth in the discus. Robert Carden finished third in the discus and fourth in the shot put, while Darby was third in the high jump and sixth in the triple jump.

On the girls side, Megan Lohr was fifth in the shot put, while Sally Ann Cooper was third in the long jump.
