April 4, 2008 - KILGORE - The Sulphur Springs Wildcats tennis team won five matches Thursday afternoon in their final tuneup before the District 11-4A tennis tournament at Lindale High School next Tuesday and Wednesday.
"We played a match at Kilgore and had some very good matches with them and a TAPPS school in a practice match," said first-year tennis coach James Lovett. "We had some of our freshmen boys playing singles, and they were playing against some experienced players and did very well."
The mixed doubles team of Shelby Carter and Josh Stoltenberg won both of their matches as they defeated the No. 1 mixed doubles team from Kilgore. They also defeated the No. 1 team from a TAPPS school.
In doubles competition, the team of Robert Stevens and Zach Adams lost both of their matches, but fought hard in their first match against the TAPPS team.
"Robert Stevens and Zach Adams played the defending TAPPS state champions and lost to them 6-4, 6-3 but it was a very close match," the coach said. "They did very well against them and they competed hard. They also played the No. 1 doubles team from Kilgore and lost but it was a very close match."
In boys action, the doubles team of Cade Winborn and Dillon Smith lost their match, before splitting singles action as Winborn won his match. Luke Penny and Garrett Swatsell split their singles matches as Swatsell won his match.
