Lady Owls knock off defending champions

From Staff Reports

Oct. 1, 2007 - FRUITVALE - Riding high on a 16-game winning streak and their newly acquired state-ranking, the Yantis Lady Owls had to go five games before upending defending District 18-A champ Fruitvale.

The Lady Owls rasied their season record to 21-1 and district slate to 4-0 with a hard fought 24-26, 25-15, 21-25, 25-23, 16-14 victory. In several games, Yantis saw leads disappear as the Lady Bobcats continually fought back.

"I am proud of the way the girls hung in there even if we did not play our best game. Fruitvale did a good job against us," Yantis head coach Dana Gilliland said. "We have to get back to work if want to continue to have success."

For the five-game match, Yantis was led by Amanda McKinney's seven kills, one ace, eight digs, five tips for scores and five assists; Jamie Gilliland with five aces, five kills, six tips, 12 digs and five assists; Baylee Gilbreath with three kills, three tips, six digs and two assists; Isy Reyna three aces, six kills, 16 digs, and six assists; Holly Madden with two aces, one kill, one tip, five tips and five aces; and Christina Tauzen with three kills, two tips, three digs and two assists.

Yantis is at home in a non-district match Tuesday and has a bye Friday.
