From Staff Reports
Sept. 30, 2007 - WINNSBORO - The Winnsboro Red Raiders will get a much-deserved week of rest after defeating Spring Hill 35-21 on Friday to improve their record to 4-1.
The Red Raiders, defending District 16-2A champions, will have a bye on Friday before hosting Grand Saline in the district opener the following week.
On Friday, Winnsboro senior Tommy Evans rushed for 205 yards and scored three touchdowns while Zack Allen added two touchdowns of his own.
Evans scored on the game's first play from scrimmage - an 80-yard run - and added TDs runs of 15 and 68 yards in the second half. He now has nine rushing touchdowns this season.
The Red Raiders were down, 14-13 at halftime, though, before Allen gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish on a 75-yard TD run early in the third period. The TD was set up by Adam Cook's fumble recovery. Josh Thacker ran in the conversion to give the Raiders a 21-14 advantage.
Winnsboro finished with 418 yards rushing and 425 total yards. Allen ended the game with 96 of that total on the ground.
Spring Hill (3-2) finished with 342 yards, including 181 on the ground. Quarterback Chris Lee was 10-of-18 for 161 yards passing.
The Panthers' touchdowns were recorded by Austin Castleberry on an 8-yard run in the second quarter, and just 20 seconds later, Taylor Fudge scored on a 13-yard run following a Spring Hill recovery of a Winnsboro fumble. Tyler Leath added the final Spring Hill TD in the third quarter.
